About

Telecom Broadband Assistant is a tool helping you to setup or resolve Yahoo Xtra email address e.g user@xtra.co.nz, set up your modem/wireless network and allows a Helpdesk Representative fix many problems using Remote Access while you're on the phone

Telecom Broadband Assistant is compatible on the following operating systems, email clients and browsers:

  • Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7
  • Outlook Express 6, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail and Outlook 2003/2007
    Note: There are plans to also support Outlook 2010 in the future.
  • Internet Explorer 7, 8 or 9

*Not currently compatible with Apple Mac

Telecom Broadband Assistant is up to 20MB to download and will count towards your monthly data allowance.

How to get it

You will need to have your email address and phone number with you to register for Telecom Broadband Assist.

  1. Go to Telecom Broadband Assistant
  2. Click Download Image
  3. Click Run on the Security Warning information box Image
  4. A second Security Warning box will appear, click Run again Image
    • A User Account Control window may appear during this process depending on your Operating System. If this occurs, click Allow to continue with normal installation
    • If the Run button doesn't appear, follow this
  5. If you have any Browsers open these will be automatically closed
  6. Click Install when you get the Telecom Broadband Assist Installation window Image
  7. Enter your Phone Number of your Telecom Broadband connection on the Registration window Image
  8. Enter your Email Address (e.g. username@xtra.co.nz)
  9. Click Next
  10. Click Finish on the Confirmation page to complete the installation Image

How to use

Set up my wireless connection using Telecom Broadband Assistant?

Note: Setting up your wireless connection using Telecom Broadband Assist will only work on Telecom supplied Broadband modems such as Technicolor TG582nTechnicolor TG797n or Thomson TG585 (v7 and v8).

  1. Open Telecom Broadband Assist Image
    •  Alternatively, go to Start, All Programs, Telecom and Broadband Assist  Image
  2. Click Wireless Image
  3. Click Set up a new wireless connection Image
  4. Click Continue on the Testing your connection screen - permission to continue page  Image

    Note: Click Continue if you get a User Account Control or UAC box appearing (particularly in Windows Vista) needing your permission to continue

  5. Click Continue when the Testing your connection plug in cables screen appears (and again if the UAC box reappears)
  6. The Wireless setup process may take up to 5 minutes and a number of screens may appear during configuration
  7. Click Finish on the Wireless connection - set up successful screen to complete the Wireless setup  Image
Set up my Yahoo!Xtra account using Telecom Broadband Assistant?

Set up your Yahoo Xtra email account on Outlook Express 6, Windows Mail, Windows Live Mail or Outlook 2003/2007 using Telecom Broadband Assistant.
NoteTelecom Broadband Assistant is not compatible with Mac Mail.

  1. Open Telecom Broadband Assist Image
    • Alternatively, go to Start, All Programs, Telecom and Broadband Assist  Image
  2. Click Email Image
    • You will be advised that Broadband Assist is Checking your Email Accounts Image
      (This process can take up to 5 minutes)
  3. A list of existing email accounts will appear. Click add an Email Account link
  4. After the Email Set up screen appears, select your preferred Email Client (e.g. Outlook , Mail) from the Email Application drop-down box
  5. Enter your Name in the Display Field as you would like it to appear when you send people emails
  6. Enter your Email (i.e. username@xtra.co.nz) in the Email Address field
  7. Enter your Password and again to confirm
  8. Click Continue
  9. An Email Set up screen will be displayed as the Broadband Assist tool configures your email client
    (This process can also take up to 5 minutes)
  10. Click Finish after you are presented with a Confirmation Screen that your email is successfully configured
How do I fix my email problem using Telecom Broadband Assist?

You will need to make sure you are connected to the internet and have Telecom Broadband Assistant installed on your computer.

  1. Open Telecom Broadband Assist Image
    • Alternatively, go to Start, All Programs, Telecom and Broadband Assist Image
  2. Click Email Image
    • You will be advised that Broadband Assist is Checking your Email Accounts Image
      (This process can take up to 5 minutes)
  3. You will be presented with a list of Email Accounts and whether they have been configured correctly
  4. Click Fix Problem next to any Email Accounts that are incorrectly configured (indicated by an X under Email Settings Image
  5. Click Finish when you get a dialogue box stating that the Broadband Assist has successfully fixed your e-mail settings Image

Note: You must restart your Email Client for any changes to the configuration to be updated.

How do I fix my wireless connection using Telecom Broadband Assist?

How do I fix my wireless connection using a cable on Telecom Broadband Assist?

  1. Open Telecom Broadband Assist Image
    • Alternatively, go to Start, All Programs, Telecom and Broadband Assist Image
  2. Click Wireless Image
  3. Click Existing wireless connection not working Image
  4. Click Continue on the Testing your connection screen - permission to continue page Image
    Note: Click Continue if you get a User Account Control or UAC box appearing (particularly in Windows Vista) needing your permission to continue
  5. If you had previously set up your wireless using Broadband Assist, you may get a Scanning for SSID screen  Image
  6. Click Continue if you see Testing your connection - check cables screen Image
  7. The configuration process may take up to 5 minutes and a number of screens may appear on the screen
  8. Click Finish when the Wireless Troubleshooting - Success screen appears Image

You will need to be on the phone with our help desk to use remote access. Call us on 0800 22 55 90 and when promoted start Remote Access

Common Questions

I have no Run button on the Security Window when I am installing the Broadband Assist. What do I do?



  1. In Internet Explorer, click Tools menu
  2. Select Internet Options
  3. Click Advanced tab
  4. Scroll down to Security
  5. Select Do not save encrypted pages to disk
  6. Click Apply
  7. Click OK

The Run button should now appear when you re-install Broadband Assist.

If I add an Email Account, will Broadband Assist create the account in the Active or Main Identity?

The new account will be created in the Main Identity.

If I create an Email Account in Outlook and then attempt to set up an alias, is there any warning or disclaimer in Broadband Assist

No. This is something that will be addressed in the future.

My Wireless (Wireless Zero configuration or equivalent in Vista and 7) is disabled? What do I do?

Broadband Assist will enable the Wireless Configuration in all supported versions of Windows.

What will happen if the wireless adaptor/drivers on the computer do not support WPA-PSK or WPA-PSK2?

The security will be dropped to WPA, but never WEP.
